Bed bugs are one of the most unpleasant pests, whose numbers have recently seen a considerable increase in the UK, particularly in London. Bed bugs are usually 4-5mm in length, flat and oval in shape, and red to brown in colour. Although they do not transmit disease, they are a parasite of man and so feed on blood. The reason for the increase in numbers in recent years is largely due to a change in people's travel habits - outbreaks often occur in hotels and homes having being brought in from overseas in baggage or on clothing. One female bed bug will then go on to lay 200 - 500 eggs over a 2 month period. The eggs are approximately 1mm long and white in colour.
